Zuhair Murad Fall 2011 Couture Collection

I widely suppose that on the worldwide popularity scale, Zuhair Murad comes right after Elie Saab and just before Georges Hobeika (or at least that’s the way it should be), and that’s why his Fall 2011 couture collection is the second one I present in this lebanese designers series.

I have to start by saying that I prefer Murad to Saab, for a very simple reason: he is much more daring. He actually brings something to fashion, (even if it caused him some awfully disastrous collection). Of course Elie Saab makes us proud to be lebanese, and I am really glad to have someone taking that much importance in the fashion industry, but somehow, Zuhair Murad’s collections interest me much more, they’re always about someting new, a new theme, a new inspiration, and about great and powerful women, filled with caracter and determination, and that’s what I like about it, he has this thing that makes him special, it’s always thrilling to find out if his new collection’s a blast or a fail.

And I’m glad to announce that this one’s a major success, I love almost everything about it, it’s the organized originality, the fitted creativity I was talking about in my last post ! Anyway, that’s enough talking, admire my favorite dresses, I hope you’ll like them too, and you can see more on his website.

To sum up, I definitely like Murad, he joined the band, and I can assure you that it’s not easy to be part of my favorites ! I hope he’ll keep up the good work and push himself even further in the creations he realizes.

Elie Saab Fall 2011 Couture Collection

Okaaay ! I’m sorry I didn’t start earlier, but I was kinda busy you see ??? Well… As I’ve been saying, it’s time to start showing you guys what the lebanese designers came up with for their Fall 2011 couture collections (actually we hardly have any ready-to-wear collections so it’s probably the only collections you’ll see).

And I figured I’d start with the most famous one… The (great) Elie Saab.

As a general matter of fact, I don’t like Saab’s work. Okay, it’s beautiful, simple, classy, eternally chic or whatever, but that’s exactly it; it’s too simple, too classy, too chic, and to me it totally lacks caracter and style, it’s absolutely not forward, simply re-editions, revesited classics. Everything’s in the drape, the embroidery, the lace, etc. But somehow you just can’t look at his work and feel like puking, they are appealing, it’s a fact, but they’ll never move me enough, they’re not exceptional pieces of art you see ? Just plain, great and déjà-vu harmony.

So, as everything is beautiful and there are no faux-pas (of course he doesn’t take risks !), I have selected a few favorites just to show you a bit of the collection, and you can see more here.

Anyway, girls will always love him, and you just have to like his designs. He pleases, that’s sure, but I don’t know how much he’ll mark the world, the debate here is about what he brings to fashion, and I’d be glad to hear your opinion !

Also on the subject of creativity, originality, art. I tend to think that it’s a designer’s choice to do art, or to sell. I mean, Lagerfeld, Valli, Saab, they seem to create things that will please, unlike McQueen, Galliano or Gaultier, whom creations, I’m sure are not bought that much but are true masterpieces. I guess the best deal, (and the hardest), is to adapt originality to the common ‘taste’, but that means you’d have to give up on some details I’m sure McQueen would have never gave up on (but Sarah Burton did), and I feel that the designers who best fit this categorie are people like Armani, Prada, Tisci, or Alaïa.

As for me, I don’t know if I’d be ready to work under money’s yoke, what’s your say about all this ?

Chanel Fall 2011 Couture Collection

At last my friends ! I’m finally doing the last ‘’foreign’’ couture review !!! Chanel’s !

I’m sorry for the delay but I got problems because I forgot my external hard drive at work, then managed to get it back but… Whatever ! I’m doing it, and then I’ll show you what the lebanese designers came up with this season !

Are you ready ? Because it was perhaps the hardest one… (To digest). I serioulsy don’t know what’s going wrong with the kaiser, perhaps he’s more conscious about his own label and is letting go Chanel… But boots with ‘classy’ suits won’t pass for me, this was a major ‘’what the fuck’’ moment. Nonetheless if you forget the boots and focus on the clothes, some are really good, and other hideous. The whole collection was inspired by Coco’s life, but I bet she would have done something totally different and I don’t even see the progress in the collection, it was a total mess !

Anyway enough talking, I divided the outfits in four categories, the nice suits, the ugly suits, the nice dresses, and the ugly dresses (although sometimes you just can’t say if it’s a suit or a dress, and that’s terrible too).

What the bloody fuckin’ fuck are these ?!?!?! Some kind of joke ?! I’m seriously waiting to see who’s gonna wear one of these for a big laugh !

This last review wasn’t as hard to do as I thought it’d be, I think the difficulty was in judging and picking the pictures, and still they’re not all here because some won’t fit any category, and you can see them here.

Oh la la ! That closes the ‘foreign’ couture reviews for Fall 2011, surprisingly the best ones were unexpected, I think about Alexandre Vauthier or Azzedine Alaïa, but also the usual good ones like Jean Paul Gaultier or Giorgio Armani who never fail to impress me. I’ve been highly disappointed by the ‘’big’’ ones, we await so much from them, but I think they should focus on their work, I mean for Chanel, Christian Dior and Valentino, that just wasn’t it… And for the rest, the new ‘rising’ stars like Alexis Mabille or Anne Valérie Hash deserve a few more collections to impress me.
